Coating with polyvinyl carbazoles - using a styrene maleic acid anhydride copolymer as intermediate layer

Substrates coated with polyvinyl carbazole (I) which is made to adhere strongly to the substrate with an adhesion facilitating layer. This consists of a styrene-maleic acid anhydride (II) copolymer contg. about 5-30 wt. % maleic acid anhydride w.r.t. the polymer. Excellent adhesion of (I) to a variety of substrates is achieved by use of the (II) copolymer as an adhesion facilitating layer. In coated substrates the semi-conducting properties of (I) are combined with the substrate properties e.g. withe the toughness of shock resistant styrene, the flexibility of polyolefines, the strength of metals. The coated substrates can be used for the prpn. of e.g. flexible copying bands and for copying cylinders for light sensitive paper.
