Machine readable coding of electrical components - using magnetic or optical methods allows identification for automatic assembly processes

A general method is used for coding of electrical components e. g. capacitors and resistors, such that automatic code recognition can occur to identify a specific component. The method of coding proposed is either based upon magnetic particles within a top varnish coating layer or else a magnetic film covering. Either coating technique lends itself to automatic scanning by a sensing head. Depending upon the sequence of information received from the sensing head, a decision may be made to identify the component and also itself relative orientation. Once identified the component may be manipulated into the correct position for assembly on a circuit board.
