During the delignification and bleaching of lignocellulosic pulp fibers with oxygen in an alkaline medium, the rate of delignification can be increased, while simultaneously protecting the pulp against excessive losses in viscosity, by contacting a slurry of lignocellulosic pulp fibers with a solution of watersoluble salt of a divalent transition metal selected from the group consisting of mangenous, nickelous, cobaltous, and vanadous ions having a concentration at least about 0.27% to about 1.10%, based on the weight of oven-dried (O.D.) pulp. |
