发明名称 END-JOINTING OF TIMBER
摘要 1471511 Joining timber WADKIN Ltd 15 March 1976 [22 March 1975] 12071/75 Heading B5L A method of joining pieces of timber comprises cutting arcuate grooves in the ends thereof, adjacent grooves being separated by arcuate fingers, and adhering together the pieces of timber with the fingers of each piece received in the grooves of the other. The grooves are preferably cut simultaneously in the two pieces of timber by placing the timber (shown, e.g. at position 12 in Fig. 1) in the path of cutter teeth on opposite sides of a rotary cutter disc 1, the cutter teeth on one face of which are at radial locations corresponding to spaces between adjacent cutting circles of teeth on the other face. The cutter has peripheral saw teeth 10 (and preferably also hogging teeth 11 disposed between the saw teeth) so that initial transverse movement of the cutter across the ends of aligned pieces of timber squares the ends preparatory to grooving. The grooving cutter teeth 9, as shown Fig. 3, are formed on a screw profile 7, screw means 6, 6a, Fig. 2, being provided for radial adjustment of the screw 7 so that the teeth 9 can be adjusted to the correct radial position after resharpening. A gauge 15 (shown dotted in Fig. 1) located by holes 16 in the cutter body is used to ensure correct adjustment of the cutter teeth 9. As shown, four grooving cutter units 3 are provided in diametrically arranged pairs on each face. In apparatus (Figs. 7, 8 not shown) for joining timber serially by the method of the invention the timber is clamped at the machining station and after transverse movement of the cutter to square the ends the trailing piece is advanced towards the cutter and the cutter simultaneously advanced by half the distance moved by the trailing piece so that the two ends are grooved simultaneously. After movement to remove the cutter, glue is applied to one or both ends of the timber and the trailing piece advanced to make the joint. Photoelectric sensors are used to sense and control feed of the timber to the machining station and to control the machine operations in dependence thereon. In an alternative embodiment of the cutter (not shown), the grooving cutter teeth are formed on a number of discs clamped together, a single tooth form being cut across the edges of the discs, which edges are suitably tapered to provide the required groove section.
