1471442 Packing for gas/liquid contact SULZER BROS Ltd 23 April 1974 [23 May 1973] 17684/74 Heading B1R [Also in Divisions C1 and F4] An orientated column packing for a material exchange column or a heat exchanger, e.g. for use in distillation of heat sensitive or corrosive compounds, comprises a packing member or a plurality of packing members in contact with one another, the or each member being formed of glass fibres which have been given a covering of bonding agent to join individual glass fibres one to another, the bonding agent containing at least one glass forming ingredient, e.g. silicon oxide, aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide and titanium oxide or a compound which yields such a material on thermal decomposition, the column packing having a plurality of channels therethrough. Suitable column packings are shown in Figures 4 and 5. Individual packing members 6, 7 may have vertical or horizontal flutings or corrugations. The packing member may be formed from layers 8, e.g. a coated woven or knitted fabric or fleece of glass fibres. A method of making a packing member for an orientated column packing comprises providing a flat structure of glass fibres in the form of a non self supporting base material, wetting this structure with a glass forming ionotropic sol, shaping the structure and drying at not more than 300‹C to form a stiffened orientated packing member. In an example, glass fibre woven fabric is treated with aluminium nitrate, alcohol, aluminium lactate and tetraethoxysilane. Stiffened specimens heat treated at 250‹C are further treated with zirconium acetylacetonate, ethanol, aqueous Ti(OH) 3 F solution and tetraethoxysilane. A second aftertreatment employs. 1% aqueous N-beta-(amino-ethyl-gammaamino-propyl-trimethoxysilane. In a second example, glass fibre woven fabric is treated with a sol containing aluminium nitrate, alcohol, tetraethoxysilane and di - isopropyloxy - titanium - bis - (acetylacetonate). Specimens become rigid in 3 seconds at 230‹C. |
