1471568 Reed contact units B E SHLESINGER and C D MARINER 7 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 43384/74 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] A reed contact spring for a sealed magnetic reed contact unit has a hinge part 4 between its support section 2 and contact section 6 and comprising a leaf spring of a thickness of less than À003 which has been cold worked so that it is more dense is less ductile, substantially harder and has a substantially higher tensile strength than the contact section 6. The hinge part 4 is flexible to at least 25 degrees or even to 180 degrees. The reed shown in Figs. 1 and 4 has been worked by a die on the surface 10. Sides 12, 14 can be cut away to produce a flat sided area (Fig. 6, not shown) or cut to align with sections 2 and 6 as in Fig. 7, the hinge section acting as a face. The sections 2 and 6 may be aligned (Figs. 9 to 12, not shown) instead of offset as in Fig. 1. The hinge section may be concave on both sides (Fig. 11, not shown) or have two concave regions (Fig. 15) providing a centre stable arrangement.
