1471801 Protective helmets GENTEX CORP 8 April 1975 [26 Aug 1974] 14418/75 Heading A3V A protective helmet comprises a hard body 12 whose peripheral edge is received in a channel 20 in a suspension frame 18 the body and channel having complementary inclined portions 16, 22 which are engaged initially on assembly of the helmet whereupon the remainder of edge 14 of the body is swung downwardly into the channel without deformation and the body and frame are secured by fastening means 26, 28. The frame has upwardly extending fingers 30, 40, 38, 46, 48 and 50 to prevent the body 12 from bottoming on the wearer's head, and these also mount resilient pads held in detachable envelopes. The frame 18 is formed with pairs of holes through which a cord 112 is threaded to anchor straps 144, 146 of a crown structure 140, the cord being accommodated in recesses 106 in the underside of the frame. The straps may have alternative cord-receiving passages for adjustment purposes or may have complementary knob members and holes to form adjustable loops. In an alternative embodiment the crown structure has front, rear and side arms projecting therefrom, each with an adjustable strap, and the adjacent arms are interconnected in adjustable manner by strips through knob and hole fasteners. In a third embodiment three generally fore-and-aft crown straps secure the crown structure to the cord by loops adjustably held by filamentary hook and loop fasteners. In place of the side fingers 46 to 50 the frame 18 may have earcup mounting portions. The cord 112 also serves to anchor chinstrap-support webbing. The body 12 suitably comprises inner and outer shells of polycarbonate resin with an intermediate layer of fibrous polyimide resin material and is coated with an elastomer. The frame 18 is of synthetic resin and the resilient pads are of foamed natural or synthetic rubber held in envelopes of glove leather. The crown structure comprises a mesh portion 142 suitably moulded from synthetic resin or woven.
