1471475 Booms J VIDILLES 4 July 1974 [16 Aug 1973] 29617/74 Heading E1H A boom for collecting pollutants on a water surface consists of an inflatable float 2 with a depending flexible skirt 3 which is weighted, e.g. by a chain 5 at its lower edge, and tethered or towed behind a vessel by the same chain 5. The depth of the skirt varied from a deepest section at the downstream end 8, to shallowest sections at the upstream edges 4, 4a. The chain may pass through a guide sleeve on the skirt, and the angle that the skirt makes with the current may be adjusted by varying the connection point 14 of a strap 12 with the chain. The skirt and float may be in sections connected together by plates which seal the sections together. Each float section may have one or more auxiliary floats in case the main float is damaged.
