<p>The purpose of rail insulation is to keep tracks snow-and ice-free. The iron rail parts are typically covered with a polyester coating to prevent heat radiation and cut down convected heat losses. In the case of the rail seating, a hinged flap is provided with a thermally insulating layer on its upper surface. The area of closure is covered with a plate fitted with an insulating layer. The use of such thermal protection is designed to avoid the use of heating elements which require the provision of suitable fuel or power lines.</p> |
