1522088 Submarine cable corrosion inhibition INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 23 April 1976 [7 May 1975] 16603/76 Heading H1A The metallic armouring of a submarine cable 26 is protected from attack by hydrogen sulphide H 2 S by embedding the cable in a protective bituminous compound 25, 28 loaded with a compound, e.g. the oxide or hydrate of Pb, Fe, Zn or Cu, which reacts with H 2 S to form an insoluble sulphide which is chemically inert with respect to the armouring, the whole being enclosed within interfitted open channelshaped members 11, 12 forming a protective tubular envelope. A trough is formed of a number of elements 11, Fig. 9, which is partially filled with the compound 25, the cable 26 being lowered into position and a further layer 28 covering the cable. Excess compound 28 is removed by tool 29 and a covering of element 12 similar to elements 11 snapped into position over 28. Elements 11, 12 are of arcuate crosssection, subtending respective angles α, # (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) greater than 180 degrees, with α<#. |
