1471732 Glass fibre manufacture OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 7 May 1974 20068/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division G3] A production line for the manufacture of fibrous structures is controlled by a plurality of control loops responsive to set point data derived by a variable scan-rate data-processing apparatus, see Divisions G2-G3. As shown, glass is supplied by a forehearth 10 to an electrically heated feeder 11 having orifices 12 for a molten stream of glass from which fibres are produced by a blower 13. The fibres are deposited on a predetermined area of a conveyer belt 41 by control of the side-walls of a hood 30. A binding agent is added through a dispenser 50. The quantity of fibre per unit area is determined by an X-ray sensing device 60 to provide (a) corrective signals for a line speed control 45, (b) a binder feed control 53 the blower 13 and (c) back-up for a throughput sensing device 25 to modify the effect of a bushing power control 20. The fibre mat is compressed by a roller device 65 under control of a sensing unit 66. The compressed mat passes through an oven 70 for curing the binder. The oven incorporates air ducts 71, 72 and a heater 74. The width of the mat is then trimmed by a saw 80. An alternative fibre providing apparatus Fig. 3, not shown, builds up a mat of continuous strands containing a plurality of filaments.
