The mechanism for holding a cover and enabling it to move is used especially for fitting into data processing equipment cabinets. The mechanism has a hinge arrangement and a brake which are made with modular units and can be assembled into different groups of a cabinet. The hinge elements are arranged symmetrically so that the cover can be opened forward or backward. The scissor shaped brake enables the oer to be held in any given open position. The cover has four hinge pins held in brackets and which are locked by the swivel levers of the hinge. These levers can be coupled by a locking lever system.
