Halonitroaromatic compounds are reduced in the liquid phase with hydrogen, a palladium or platinum catalyst and a dehalogenation-suppressing amount of a compound of the formula <IMAGE> wherein X is H, OH, alkyl, phenyl or mono- or dialkylphenyl.
