The device consists of a guide tube and a microscope. The guide tube is arranged adjustably on a vaginal speculum and has its own lighting arrangement and also a graduated collar for focusing the microscope, and precise adjustment clips (23) for preventing inadvertent movements of the microscope. The microscope is arranged adjustably in the guide tube so that focusing on several fields to be examined is possible without moving the guide tube, and it has two lighting systems, of which one supplies light for visual examination and the other supplies an electronic flashlight for a photographic camera. The microscope can be removed from the stationary guide tube, its lens and eyepiece can be replaced by others with different magnifications, and it can be inserted again into the guide tube in order to permit an examination at different magnifications. The device is suitable in particular for early detection of cervical cancer. <IMAGE>
