In a two-part vulcanisation system the first part, which does not cause vulcanisation on its own, is introduced into the raw rubber sheet during its prodn. The second part is applied to the sheet after laying the latter, as a soln. in a solvent which promotes migration of the vulcanisation agents into the bulk of the rubber sheet. The sheet is an ethylene/propylene copolymer or an ethylene/propylene/diene terpolymer. These polymers are well suited to the process because migration of the vulcanisation agents occurs rapidly and deeply into the rubber layer which may be several mms thick. the sheet can be laid to conform to any complex shapde and, after applying the soln., cures rapidly to form a strongly adherent protective layer. Used for lining reservoirs etc. as roofing sheets and for protecting pipes against corrosion.
|
