A process for washing and bleaching textile materials and clothes comprises contacting them with an aq. soln. of a detergent compsn. contg. a peroxidised bleaching agent; the water used to prepare the soln. having been passed through an anion exchange resin to substantially eliminate bicarbonate ions. Used partic. in washing machines, Na perborate is the bleaching agent commonly employed. The concn. of OOH- ions, which provide the bleaching is highest at a pH >10 and pref. about 11. With hard water, the pH is about 9.5-9.7 due to the buffering effect of bicarbonate ions and therefore the bleaching efficiency is reduced. The above process overcomes this difficulty. Process is pref. effected in a washing machine with an anion exchanger incorporated in the water feed; esp. in the form of a column. |
