Floating harbour is for temporary use, and comprises a ship, typically a ballasted tanker, anchored in the desired position. Two mooring quays (2, 3) are situated on opposite sides of the ship, and from them a set of tracks (16) run to a railway system on the shore. The equipment of the original ship is so arranged that its ability to sail on the high seas is unimpaired. Anchoring can be by vertical piles sliding in tubes through the bottom of the hull. Each pile works with a driving block dropped on it to drive it into the seabed, and one or more submersible ballast tanks from which water is discharged to give the lifting force to pull it free.
|
