Synchronous machine for peak load supply - is coupled to flywheel and is joined to power system by static converter

A synchronous machine to cover short duration peak loads is coupled to a fly wheel which feeds power into the distribution system through a static frequency converter. The unit is driven up to a high speed during off peak periods thus helping towards a constant load on the supply system main generators. For example, a tranformer couples the unit to the power system, and a rectifier and inverter unit match machine and system frequency when output is required. The rotating masses are driven up to a high speed by a d.c. motor supplied from the rectifier part of the frequency converter. Alternatively the synchronous machine may also be used as the motor by suitable aterations to the static converter controls. Units of 1MWh capacity are projected.
