1470858 Seals E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 12 June 1974 [13 June 1973] 26131/74 Heading F2B [Also in Division C3] A gasket or O-ring is made from a fluoroelastomer containing a fibrous filler in which the fibres have a length/diameter ratio of at least 15 and are oriented radially so that at least 25% of the fibres form an angle of no more than 30 degrees with radii drawn through the axis in the plane of the ring. The ring is made by incorporating the fibres into the uncured elastomer by milling to orient the fibres, cutting a strip perpendicular to the direction of milling, joining the ends to form a flat ring with the fibres oriented radially and curing the ring. The preferred elastomer is vinyl fluoride/hexafluoropropene copolymer and the fibres are potassium titanate or acicular rutile.
