Process control computer for simple applications - uses pocket calculator chip for arithmetic functions and separate cycle control unit

A process controller consists of a main cycle control unit operating together with a computer unit to perform any detailed arithmetic operation. A pocket calculator module is intended for this latter junction. Typically data is processed over a bus (6) and in particular data and instructions entered into a store (10). Decoded data (11) is supplied over an input (12) to the pocket calculator chip (13). Any output from the calculator is decobed (17) and entered into a buffer memory (15). The cycle control (16) co-ordinates the operation of the units and the processing of interrupts etc. By providing separate cycle control and computational facility, any arithmetic process may proceed at the relatively slow speed possible with calculator chips without disadvantage.
