Solid electrolyte (I) with mainly ionic conductance at high temps., for use in galvanic cells for the determn. of the O2 partial pressure of gases and the O2 activity of metal melts, consists of the cpd. CaOo. 85-1.10. ZrO, in which the CaO is opt. (partly) replaced by MgO and/or Y2O3. The critical O2 partial pressure, Pe, is much lower at high temp. than that of stabilised ZrO2 with 13 mole % CaO, so that, e.g. the course of Al deoxidn. of steel melts can be followed exactly. In an example, the Pe values for ZrO2 with 13, 46.1 and 51.8 mole % CaO respectively at 1600 degrees C were 1.17 X 10-15, 1.41 x 10-18 and 1.54 x 10-18 atmos. |
