Profile measurement for curved surfaces - uses friction and play reducing air bearing for extended measurement range

A profile measurement device for profiles of objects with curved sides is designed for extended range of measurement by ensuring friction- and play-free probe positioning and constant probe contact force, thus eliminating probe positional and bending errors. The measurement probe (2) is placed in contact with the profile (1) and is movable in two mutually perpendicular directions, one parallel and one perpendicular to its axis. The probe may be tilted about a null position in a vertical plane perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. The probe or its mounting carries an indicator scale (8) which moves relative to an indicator point (9) without touching it. The probe is mounted on an air-bearing for friction reduction.
