<p>A block, esp. an electrode, is made of a granular material mixed with binders and fed into a metal mould, a wt. then being placed on top of the material. The mould is located on a vibrator operated by a double-acting hydraulic piston and employed to compact the material in the mould. The working pressure is measured in the hydraulic cylinder, on each side of the piston, and used to derive the amplitude of the pressure difference (dp); and this value is maximised by altering the frequency and/or the amplitude of the vibrator. The value (dp) can be maximised by hand or automatically during compaction, the pref. appts. including a measurement and control circuit.
