In the roadside rail, the plane of the tangential setting of the rail surface facing the traffic area slopes towards this area, enclosing an angle of about 10 deg. with the vertical. The rails are joined to the supports with intervening plastically deformable fixture steel shackles. The shackles are bent in the shape of a vertical oval, lying in the plane which passes through the support concerned. The upper part (7) of this has a greater radius of curvature than the lower part (8). Inside this oval there may be a bent and plastically deformable auxiliary shackle (12) of steel, lying in the same plane, welded to a straight fixture shackle (5), and at an interval from the stake (3). With the large radius curve more readily deformed than the smaller one, the rail is arched upwards in the event of an impact, preventing the colliding vehicle from crashing over the top.
