The fuel injection channel (5) is surrounded by an annular chamber (6). The chamber is joined to the main combustion chamber (4) by channels (7) running of the side of the fuel injector channels. The channels enter the air chamber surrounding fuel injector channels at a tangent or on a radial plane (8) to mix with the fuel injection. Alternatively the air channels could be formed on top of the piston crown. One channel would be a recessed extension of the fuel injection channel and two further channels would run half way around the piston edge region and taper away.
