A device for the contactless striking of a d.c. welding arc in welding operations with a non-consumable electrode has in one of the two output leads from the rectified d.c. supply unit a blocking diode. The striking current generator, in parallel to the latter, is pref. a high-tension transformer in line with a current-limiting resistor and a feeder diode. This provides a simple arc striking current generator which consists of few parts, is functionally reliable and inexpensive to produce. It is suited equally well to plasma welding, inert gas tungsten-arc welding and other procedures with non-consumable electrodes.
