The cutter for workpieces made of hard, brittle or mono-crystalline materials comprises a support (7) with two removable rollers (5) and a guide (23) for the support pivoting on the frame (2) of the cutter. The wire (19) is wound onto the rollers between them over two guide rollers, and maintained under tension. The workpiece is cut along a line in a given surface by the wire which is moved by alternating corotation of the rollers. The rollers on the support are internally threaded. They are guided along two externally threaded shafts (6) and driven by drivers parallel to the shafts. Each winding roller has a guide groove with this same pitch.
