Process for the chemical nickel coating of workpieces with a catalytic surface, by prepn. of a soln. contg. Ni salts, salts of the lower phosphoric acids, a complex-former, buffer and accelerator, adn a stabiliser, the soln. being heated above 60 degrees C. but below b.pt., immersing the workpieces; replenishing the soln; cooling o below 45 degrees C but above freezing and adding an alkali; and collecting the solid particles pptd. during coating. The novelty is that during coating the upper part of the soln. is heated above 60 degrees C but below b.pt. and replenished, whereas the lower part is simultaneously cooled below 45 degrees C and a reagent added to adjust the acidity. A reduced amt. of soln. is required and savings in Ni, reagents and energy achieved.
