The device comprises a light source whose radiation is fed into the fibre. A receiver receives a radiation reflected from faults in the fibre, and this radiation is separated from that fed into the fibre. A mirror (9) is used which is transparent at its centre. It is placed in an inclined position between the light source (1) and the fibre (5) end (11). A lens (8) focusses the light from a source (1) on the mirror centre, and a second lens (10) projects the mirror centre image on the fibre end (11). A third lens (12) focusses radiation reflected from faults on the light receiver (7).
