The intake mainfold base below the carburettor flange has a recess (3) to contain a large surface ceramic heating plate (4) contoured to the intake to offer a minimum flow resistance. The manifold is additionally heated by a water channel (5) which flows round the heater element and provided with inlet and outlet unions (6, 7). The current to the heater element is provided by the vehicle battery via a relay switch actuated by the ignition switch and temporally switched off for the period in which the starter motor is actuated. A Thermo switch which can be a semi-conductor or a bimetal switch cuts the current to the heater element when a pre-determined temperature is reached.
