Self-storing gas discharge display operation uses gas exchange between paths of discharge of first and second cross grid matrix. The first matrix consists of a first and second electrode array and an intermediate multiple hole disc for the formation of discharge channels. The second matrix consists of a first and second electrode array and an intermediate spacer disc. Periodically recurring control pulses are applied between the electrodes of the first matrix, and a discharge is ignited continuously in the second matrix. The gas discharge display consists of a transparent front plate (1) and a rear disc (2) made of insulating material.
