The pH of the reaction mixture may be 1À5 to 2À5. The heat exchange means may be a chain or chains suspended inside the drum which may be horizontally mounted. The drum may be heated by an internal burner. The red mud and acid may be mixed in a mixing tube which may project into the drum. The process may be continuous. The particle size may be controlled by altering the drum speed and the heating.
