1452858 Decorative laminates ORCHARD CORP OF AMERICA 27 Aug 1974 [20 Sept 1973 28 Jan 1974] 37409/74 Heading B5N A laminate comprises an overlay sheet of cellulosic material, a multiplicity of substrate sheets of cellulosic material, a decorative sheet between the overlay sheet and the substrate sheets, a thermoset resin coating adhering to at least one face of the decorative sheet, a melamine-formaldehyde or modified melamineformaldehyde resin impregnating the overlay sheet and fusing it to the decorative sheet, and a phenolic resin impregnating the substrate sheets and fusing them to each other and to the decorative sheet. The laminate may be made by subjecting a laminating assembly comprising an overlay sheet of cellulosic material impregnated with a melamine-formaldehyde or modified melamine-formaldehyde resin, an unimpregnated decorative sheet having an adhesive coating on at least one face which adhesive coating comprises a thermosettable resin, and a substrate comprising a multiplicity of sheets of cellulosic material impregnated with a phenolic resin, one face of the decorative sheet confronting the substrate and the other face confronting the overlay sheet, for a predetermined period of time to a temperature and pressure sufficiently high to effect lamination. The overlay sheet is suitably formed from alpha-cellulose paper. The decorative sheet is preferably formed from a fibrous cellulosic material, e.g. paper and the adhesive coating may comprise an epoxy resin, a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a phenol-furfural resin, a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, a poly. vinyl butyral, a polyacrylonitrile, a polyvinylacetal, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, a polyester or a urea-formaldehyde resin, which adhesive may be applied as a solution containing a suitable curing agent. The substrate sheets are preferably formed from bleached kraft paper.
|
