The device enables the users of small boats to detect the presence and bearing of a ship or obstacle. It uses a radio obstacle detection procedure. The ship or obstacle emits electromagnetic waves which are received by the user and which enable him to detect the obstacle's presence. A magnetic bearing compass is associated with the receiver in order to determine the obstacle's bearing. The detection of electromagnetic waves is indicated by a warning lamp and an audible signal. The intensity of the received waves is determined using a galvanometer. The appts. is particularly useful for those small boats, such as fishing vessels not equipped with radar.
