The telescopic ladder has an internal section movable in an external one. Pads are fixed to the uprights of the internal section, the pads being longer than the interval between rungs. Further pads, preferably shorter, are fixed to the uprights of the external section at the top end. Alternatively sleeves can be mounted at intervals along the external section uprights, or there can be rollers at the bottom of the internal and top of the external section.
