1501058 Anti-fouling coatings on marine structures and watercraft C F DELONG and G L ERION 6 Sept 1976 [19 Sept 1975] 36844/76 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Watercraft and stationary underwater structures precoated with hard-surface, leaching- type anti-fouling paints are overcoated with compositions comprising (1) an aqueous solution or dispersion of a carboxylated hydrophilic acrylic polymer, (2) a crosslinking agent therefor, (3) polyethyleneimine or a hydrophilic derivative thereof and (4) 0.3-.75% of an ultraviolet light absorbing agent. The acrylic polymer may be a copolymer of one or more alkyl acrylates or methacrylates with an unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. acrylic acid, and may be solubilised with an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide or an amine. The cross linking agent may be an aminoplast or epoxy resin or a multivalent metal ion. Suitable polyethyleneimine derivatives are epichlorhydrin, propylene oxide, ethylene oxide and urea derivatives. The preferred ultraviolet absorber is 2-ethoxyethyl p-methoxycinnamate. In examples coated wooden and fibreglass boat hulls are overcoated. |
