A pebble-bed reactor has a homogeneous distribution of spherical elements (in regard to their nuclear physics characteristics) throughout the core. The flow of elements is downwards. The vertical speed of the elements in the peripheral region is greater than in the centre. Pref. where a solid side reflector surrounds the core, the vertical speed of the elements in the peripheral region is twice as high as in the centre. Constant coolant outlet temp. is obtd. across the entire core width, leading to improved thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger and longer plant life. Separate types of fuel element contg. different proportions of fuel, are not required and absolutely identical elements can be supplied across the entire width of the reactor. The fuel programme is based upon the principle of using a total burn-up rate of 60,000 Mwd per tonne, and utilising the small variation in economy through this range to obtain improved economics by more rational thermal regime.
