A semi conductor (8) is wired parallel to the armature winding. The purpose of the semi conductor is to feed stored magnetic energy to the armature winding (3) when changing from one resistance (7) to the next to avoid jerking. Alternatively, the semi conductor could be wired parallel to the field winding (4) which is in series with the armature. The unit is esp. for electrically driven rail vehicles.
