摘要 <p>Stones or rocks are drilled or cut by a process using infrared lasers and magnetostrictive or ultrasonic crystal vibrators. The laser beam is automatically fed at uniform speed to and fro along a line on the stone, which is provided with ultrasonic transducers operating at a wavelength corresp. with the size of the crystals in the stone. The crystal structure os therefore vibrated while it is exposed to the laser beam. Optical fibres or waveguides are used to direct the laser beam, e.g. into a hole. Theuse of magnetostrictive or ultrasonic transducers permits an increased in the energy supplied by the laser beam, and therefore higher drilling or cutting speeds.</p>
