<p>Chuck apparatus including a plurality of angularly spaced chuck jaws which are mounted for concurrent radial and axial movement between radially outer and inner positions to rigidly clamp a workpiece with a clamping force which has an axial force component substantially greater than the radial force component thereof. The jaws clamp the workpiece to a variable height support structure comprising tiers of stacked pairs of spaced apart rest bars, the rest bars in each tier except the bottom being arranged crosswisely to the rest bars on which they are received and supported.</p> |
