Rear emergency exit for bus - with fold down extending ramp with safety release catch and balance spring

The rear of the bus has a fold down door (20) which is pivoted about a horizontal axis a little way up from the bottom. It is balanced by a damper (7) and spring between the bottom edge and the bus and secured by special catches. The safety catch can be released by the driver or by an outside hand hold. When the door folds down it forms a sloping ramp to the ground. The ramp is extended by a sliding panel (21) inside the door. Headroom is improved by a fold up window panel (2) above the opening. The emergency exit provides a safe, unimpeded passage for all passengers, even old and infirm. The supporting springs are balanced to support the weight of the door and prevent it from folding down too fast.
