The method of manufacture is to place 45-70% of the Cr-B-Fe shot in a ceramic mould of the required shape, covering it with the Fe-B matrix alloy, preferably in shot form of similar size (0À5-2 mu dia), and melting under vacuum or inert gas, the heating being carried out in two stages, to minimize the time the matrix metal is actually molten. On cooling, the shaped article may be brazed or welded to a substrate without loss of hardness or strength. The composite material may be used as an insert on a ground-engaging tool such as the blades on motor graders. |
