<p>The steering column is linked to the steering rods by a servo powered link (15) in which the length of the link is increased telescopically by the hydraulic servo force, linked to a pump (21). The pump is only switched on when the force on the steering column is above a set limit, as determined by a strain gauge (36). The strain gauge is linked to the control circuit (38) by a coiled cable (37) around the steering column. The gauge output is amplified and passed to the pump control. The servo is only used as required and thus saves fuel over long periods.</p> |
