The bicycle pedals operate a first chain wheel (T) of the pulley drive to the rear wheels, with the endless chain or the pulley drive to the rear wheels, with the endless chain or belt looped over the larger diameter of a second pulley (P) on the way to the rear wheel pulley (Q). The return path of the chain is over the smaller diameter of the central pulley (P). The whole system operates like a block and tackle, but with fixed wheels. It allows a minimum of manual effort to drive the bicycle over steep gradients, and at high speeds. The system can be used for chain driven vehicles with small engines.
|
