1371779 Laminating apparatus CLUETT PEABODY & CO Inc 1 Dec 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 55743/71 Heading B5N Apparatus for fusing a strip of fusible material, e.g. a stiffener, to a workpiece, e.g. a collar, comprises a first electrode 15 which is provided with at least one vacuum port 19 through which a vacuum may be drawn to hold a strip of fusible material against the face of the first electrode, a second electrode 24, the electrodes being adapted to be selectively spaced apart or adjacent, a plate 33 having therein a recess adapted to receive a strip of fusible material from a stack of such strips, the plate being movable along a path at an oblique angle to the long dimension of a strip received by the recess, to, and retractable from, a position with the recess adjacent to and in register with the vacuum part(s) when the electrodes are spaced apart, means to bring the electrodes together when the plate is retracted, such that a strip of fusible material held against the first electrode may be fused to a workpiece located in intimate contact with the second electrode and between the electrodes. The first electrode may be moved towards the second electrode by means of air piston 11 having piston-rod 12 threaded into fitting 13 to which is secured plate 14 which carries electrode 15. RF leakage is prevented by means of metal curtain 25 attached to plate 14 on two sides and extending generally the length of the electrode and provided with spring fingers 26 which contact table 22 to ground the curtain during the fusing operation. Contacts 27 co-operate with overhang 28 to ground the upper assembly along the back edge during fusing. The overhang trips wheel mechanism 29 on the upward travel of piston 12 to indicate the position of the upper electrode and to signal the stiffener feed sequence. An interlock element is proivded to prevent stiffener feeding except when the upper electrode is in a fully raised position. The bottom strip is stripped from a stack of such strips provided in box 32 held by clamps 31 and while held in the recess in plate 33 attached to a mount 34 which rides on rods 36 journalled in block 37 is moved due to the action of an air piston towards electrode 15. The recess in plate 33 may be provided with vacuum ports and means provided to apply a vacuum therethrough to hold a strip firmly in the recess during movement of the plate, the vacuum being shut off when the recess is located adjacent to and in register with the vacuum ports associated with the first electrode.
