The square farrowing-unit (10) is enclosed by sides (11, 12, 13, 14) with the sow's pen divided into a relining-area (16) with heated floor (18) and a manure-part (17) with gutter (20) covered by a grille. Near the outer sides (11, 14) is a hinge (21, 22) consisting of an upright and a sleeve (24). Joined to each sleeve (24) is a shield (25, 26) consisting of a rectangular frame with horizontal struts (28). The shields (25, 26) are equal in length to the distance between each hinge (21, 22) from the opposite corner (29, 30) of the pen. The shield can swivel from one side (11) to the other (14). A drinking/feeding trough (31) for sow is situated in the corner between the hinges (21, 22). Drinking/feeding troughs (32) for the piglets are situated near the corner (30). A hoop-shaped spacer-piece (33) has a yoke (34) and two long sides (35) and pivots on a horizontal axle (36) formed by two sockets (37, 38).
