The starting and landing arrangement is used for a levitated with electrodynamic support. The retractable and lowered wheels have flanges to travel on conventional rails. The solenoids of the support arrangement are held on the sprung or unsprung bogies. This ensures reliable alignment of flanged wheels with conventional rails when the wheels are lowered. The retractable and lowered flange wheels (3) have guide shoes (11). These guide shoes are held on laterally sliding supports. At the start the vehicle slides on lowered guide shoes while the wheels are retracted. Subsequently the vehicle is levitated. After levitation power is stopped the guides are lowered for gripping the rail and sliding until the wheels are synchronised and lowered when the shoes are retracted.
