Adhesive paper labels or etiquettes are removed from plastics mouldings by breaking the plastics articles to obt. pieces with sharp edges; heating the resulting scrap briefly in a washing drum (dia. above 100 cm) by steam to 100 degrees C; adding highly alkaline washing and wetting agents so that the paper labels are reduced to a pulp and scraped off the sharp edges; rinsing the plastics a broken pieces in water to removed the wetting agent; and drying. Used for recovery of plastics scrap for re-moulding. Process is cheap because the sharp edges of the plastics pieces remove the undesirable paper labels almost automatically. Heating (by steam) ensures that the cleaned plastics waste leaves the washing drum whilst still warm (but not as a melt) so that it dries readily without a separate drying operation.
|
