1469813 Inhibiting binder migration in non-woven fabrics SANDOZ Ltd 26 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 13239/74 Headings DIB, D1R and D2B [Also in Division C3] A non-woven fabric is impregnated with an aqueous medium containing a dispersion of a polymeric binder a migration inhibitor and optionally a dye and heated to coagulate the binder and dry the fabric, thereby preventing migration of the binder and of the dye, if present, the migration inhibitor having the formula as the free base, acid addition salt or quaternary ammonium salt, where R is an unsubstituted C 10-24 alkyl or alkenyl radical, X is -[C 2 H 3 R x -O] r -H, Y is -[C 2 H 3 R y -O] s -H and Z is -[C 2 H 3 R z -O] t -H where each R x , R y , R z is independently hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and r, s and t are integers from 2 to 96 with the proviso that the sum of r, s and t is 15 to 100. Many inhibitors are specified; those exemplified are of formula Ia in which R 1 is an alkyl or alkenyl radical derived from reduced tallow fatty acids i.e. from a mixture of lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachic, oleic and linoleic acids in which each of the polyether chains contains all ethyleneoxy groups or all propyleneoxy groups or an ordered chain of ethylenoxy groups followed by an ordered chain of propyleneoxy groups, f + g + h being 5 to 40, preferably 21 and i + j + k is 10 to 60, preferably 14, 24 or 54. The fibres may be cotton, jute, sisal, wool, silk, viscose, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene, shrinkable polyester and mixtures thereof. They may be formed into a web hydrodynamically. The binder may be homo- and copolymers of butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile, isobutylene, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl halides, vinylidine chloride, methyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, methacrylic esters, methylene-bisacrylic amide, N-methyl acrylamide or polymers formed by condensing dimethylol urea, dimethylol propylene urea, dimethylol melamine or dimethylol methylcarbonate. Preferably the migration inhibitor and the dye (if present) 2 are contained in the binder liquor, there being 1 to 50 parts by weight of inhibitor per 100 parts binder. The inhibitor may be present as the formic, acetic, propionic, lactic, oxalic, phosphoric, sulphuric, hydrochloric or sulphamic salt. Alternatively it may have been quaternised with dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphate, methyl chloride or benzyl chloride. Coagulation is effected at 25� to 200�C. The exemplified dyes are |
