1469406 Riveting AUTOMATIC FASTENER CORP 9 May 1974 [29 May 1973] 25582/73 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for setting a blind tubular fastener 84 in workpieces 114, 116, comprises means 90 for setting one end of the fastener, mandrel means 30 for setting the other end of the fastener, and driving the fastener against the setting means 90 and means 110 for engaging the rearmost workpiece 116 and driving it forwardly whilst the fastener 84 is being driven towards the setting means 90. Upon actuation of a pneumatic-hydraulic assembly 26 by a trigger 80, a mandrel 32 is moved rearwardly by a piston 66 causing a head 40 of the mandrel 32 to expand fingers 46 of a sleeve 34 surrounding the mandrel 32 so as to set the blind end of the fastener 84. When a collar 44 on the mandrel 32 engages a rear flange on a member 56, the mandrel 32 and expanded fingers 46 are moved in unison, by a flange 52 connected to the member 56 engaging a flange 48 on the sleeve 34, to cause the fastener 84 with the workpiece 114 fixed thereon to be moved against a nosepiece 90. A flange 88 of the fastener 84 is slit by sharp ridges 102 on a curved portion 100 of the nosepiece 90 and the slit segments are curved outwardly to set this end of the fastener 84. As the fastener 84 is driven rearwardly, the workpieces 114, 116 are pushed together by a resilient member 110 formed of rubber or plastics or formed by a spring. When the trigger 80 is released, the mandrel assembly 30 is returned to its unexpanded state by springs 76, 78 to allow it to be withdrawn through the set fastener. In another embodiment, the nosepiece 90 comprises a frusto-conical portion (200) (Fig. 10b, not shown) which is used with a fastener having notches (189) (Fig. 17, not shown) in the flange 88 which cause the flange 88 to rupture during setting to produce the flange segments. In other embodiments, the nosepiece 90 outwardly deforms the rear of the fastener 84 without splitting it and may comprise two frusto-conical portions (302, 304) (Fig. 11b, not shown) separated by a groove (306). Alternatively, the nosepiece 90 may comprise a dished recess (502) (Fig. 13, not shown) or a frusto-pyramid portion (400) (Fig. 12b, not shown) having rounded edges (404) between the flat sides (402). |
